Sharp Airlines has commenced a direct airline passenger and freight services from Essendon Airport to King Island and return.
Operating five days per week, this new service meets the needs of tourists, the local King Island community, business and freight providers for more services from Melbourne to King Island. There are plans to expand services depending on demand for the new convenient operations.
Chris Cowan, Essendon Fields CEO said the decision by Sharp Airlines to expand its operations out of Essendon Airport (it already operates return services to Warrnambool, Flinders Island & Portland) illustrates the future of regional airlines services from the convenient Essendon base.
“I’m excited that Sharp is flying direct to King Island from Essendon Airport. We are the obvious home to regional aviation in Melbourne. We have $8 per day parking, no frills terminal, no delays from terminal to wheels up, simple check in process and we are that much closer to the CBD as well. We also now have a $6 shuttle bus to Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine), which makes transfers easier for regional passengers. The shuttle is free from Melbourne Airport to Essendon Airport; passengers just need to call 0406 675 729 when collecting their luggage for pick up. Plus we are the only Airport in Australia with a tram service.” said Mr Cowan.
If passengers arrive early for their flight back at Essendon Fields, we have a whole range of attractions including shopping at DFO, whisky tastings at New World Whisky Distillery plus great coffee and food shopping at Runway Plaza or the infamous LaManna Supermarket” added Mr Cowan.
Sharp Airlines Director Malcolm Sharp was excited to announce the new service commencing in late October.
“It reaffirms our long term commitment to the King Island community and economy, consolidating Sharp Airlines as a major provider of airline services to the Island,” he said.
“The expansion of the network offers customers a greater range of options and our high speed turbine propeller Metro-liner aircraft will have a flight time of only 35 minutes between destinations. With the new service, Sharp Airlines will now operate over 20 return services per week to King Island including Launceston and Wynyard,” Mr Sharp added.
