Regional airline operator JETGO began regular direct flights between Illawarra Regional Airport and Melbourne on Monday 30th October.
JETGO will operate a seven day-a-week service between Illawarra Regional Airport and Essendon Airport, offering passengers in both directions important links for business, leisure or family related travel.
Four days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) JETGO will operate twice daily flights between Wollongong and Melbourne, with daily flights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; a total of 11 weekly return flights.
JETGO Australia, Managing Director Airlines, Paul Bredereck, said “ticket sales for the new direct service to Melbourne had exceeded the airline’s expectations”.
“JETGO are delighted to be offering a return Melbourne service for our customers. This really opens up the links between regional NSW and Melbourne. We think this new service will go so well there is even the chance we will expand operations in the future,’’ he said.
Chris Cowan, Essendon Airport CEO, welcomed JETGO to Melbourne and said passengers will enjoy the ease of travel when they arrive at Essendon Airport, with quick easy transfers to the rest of Melbourne.
“Wollongong passengers will enjoy the benefits of arriving at Essendon Airport, especially the time savings, lack of congestion and the popular retail amenities on site like Melbourne’s most successful DFO and our newly opened Hyatt Place hotel. JETGO is a significant regional airline that has chosen Essendon Fields as its preferred airport in Melbourne for all the above reasons,” he said.
Illawarra Regional Airport is owned and operated by Shellharbour City Council.
Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba was aboard the first JETGO flight from Albion Park.
Cr Saliba described it as “a really exciting day to actually see this come to fruition”.
Tickets are on sale at www.jetgo.com or travel agents with fares starting from $155 one-way.
