There is a safety requirement for piston type aircraft to cycle their engines prior to takeoff. This will usually take between 1 and 5 minutes. This is known as an engine runup.
There is a second type of engine running which is called “Ground Running”. This is engine operation which is associated with aircraft engine maintenance.
“Ground Running” is only permitted during the following hours.
- 7:00am – 6:00pm (Monday to Friday)
- 10:00am – 6:00pm (Saturday and Sunday).
Ground Running is permitted anywhere on the airport grounds. A “Ground Running” bay exists approximately 450m east of the Essendon Airport Terminal Building and is used for Ground Running that will occur for an extended period of time. This area is also where Helicopters conduct hover tests.
